I am dj ben aka billy brown from Bordeaux, France.2. When and how did you first had contact with hiphop and bboying culture?
I had my first contact with hip hop back in 1990 and i first got interested in the bboying culture back in 1998.3. I know you play other styles of music but, what made you become a Dj in general, and a bboying Dj in particular?
I started djing in 1992/1993. i started by collecting rap, raggamuffin and new jack swing records. In 1998, friends of mine got into bboying. I watched the boty 1998 video and that’s when i first discovered what bboy music was.4. When you're playing in a battle we can see you pay attention to the action. Do you think that is one of the things that makes you diferent from a lot of other djs, that seem they are just playin for themselves ?
It is mandatory that when you spin a bboy battle you focus on what’s going on on the dancefloor. As a bboy dj you have to put the bboys first.5. I know that, as a Dj, you have to make a lot of reaserch to look for the perfect "new beat". Do you see that as the hardest part of your preparation?
Yes, beat digging takes a lot of my time and a lot of my money too ! It keeps me busy all week long. I spend the time i have left adding the new finds to my sets and building up new ones.6. How many hours a day do you practice your skills as a Dj.....and as a bboy
?
I try to practice my dj skills one hour a day, that’s for scratching, back spinning etc. I spend about 5 hours a day looking for new beats, working on new sets etc. As for bboying i try to hit the practice spot 2 times a week when i have some spare time, but most of the time i cant go that often L.7. Along with that "hard work" , djing is an art form, so you have to be inspired. What is your main inspiration for giving us the fine beats you give in battle and with your mix tapes?
I got a lot of my inspiration from a french dj named DJ CLYDE who used to dj for NTM back in the days. i just loved the way he back spinned. And as all we breaks dj do, i learned a lot from dj Leacy R.I.P.8. Did the djing made you change the way you see life, with all the travelling and the recognition?
Yes, thanks to djing i got to travel around the world a lot. I saw a lot of different countries, discovered other cultures and got to meet bboys from all nationalities. Some of my trip were really good experiences and allowed me to see life on completely different angles.9. Do you see your self not being a dj? What do you think you would be doing now if you weren't a dj?
No, i cannot picture myself doing something else. Hip-hop is in my blood, i live it 24/7, 365 days a year for real. If i was not a dj, i could be hmmm a pimp yeah ! why not J10. Tell us your 3 all time favorite bboying beats

Back when i came to spin at the portuguese champs i noticed that many crews were missing and i was very disappointed with that ! 2) Quando e como é que tiveste o teu primeiro contacto com a cultura do hip-hop e do bboying?
Tive o meu primeiro contacto com o hip-hop em 1990 e comecei a interessar-me pela cultura do bboying em 1998.
3) Eu sei que também passas outros estilos de música, mas o que te fez tornar um DJ em geral e um DJ de bboying em particular?
Comecei com dj’ing em 1992/1993. Comecei por coleccionar álbuns de rap, raggamufin e new Jack swing. Em 1998, amigos meus começaram com bboying. Eu vi o vídeo do BOTY 1998 e foi ai que descobri o que é música de bboy.
4. Quando estás a passar música numa battle, nos podemos ver que estás com atenção à acção. Achas que isto é uma das coisas que te torna diferente de muitos outros DJ’s, que parece que estão a tocar só para eles?
É mandatário que quando estás a mixar numa battle de bboys, que te concentres no que se está a passar no dancefloor. Como DJ de bboys, tens que por os bboys em primeiro.
5) Sei que, como DJ, tens que fazer muita pesquisa para procurar o “novo beat” perfeito. Vês isso como a parte mais difícil da tua preparação?
Sim, “escavar” beats tira-me muito tempo e dinheiro também! Mantêm-me ocupado toda a semana. Eu gasto o tempo que me resta a adicionar as minhas novas descobertas aos meus sets e a construir outros novos.
6. Quantas horas por dia praticas os teus skills enquanto um DJ?...e enquanto um bboy?
Eu tento praticar os meus skills de DJ uma hora por dia, isto é para scratching, back spinning etc. Eu gasto cerca de 5 horas por dia à procura de novos beats, a trabalhar em novos sets etc. Quanto ao bboying eu tento praticar 2 vezes por semana quando tenho algum tempo livre, mas a maior parte das vezes não posso.
7) Para além de um “trabalho árduo”, dj’ing é uma arte, por isso deves ter alguma inspiração. Qual é a tua principal inspiração para nos dares os bons beats que dás nas battles e nos teus mixtapes?
Eu recebi muita da minha inspiração de um dj francês chamado DJ CLYDE que costumava ser DJ dos NTM, nos velhos tempos. Eu adorava a maneira como ele fazia back spinning. E tal como todos os dj’s de breaks, aprendi muito do DJ Leacy R.I.P.
O dj’ing fez-te mudar a tua maneira de ver a vida, com todas as viagens e reconhecimento?
Sim, graças ao dj’ing tive a possibilidade de viajar a volta do mundo. Vi muitos países diferentes, descobri outras culturas e conheci bboys de todas as nacionalidades. Algumas das minhas viagens foram experiencias muito boas e permitiram-me ver a vida de ângulos completamente diferentes.
9) Consegues-te imaginar sem o dj’ing? O que achas que farias agora se não fosses DJ?
Não, não me consigo imaginar a fazer outra coisa. Hip-Hop está-me no sangue, eu vivo-o 24/7, 365 dias por ano! Se não fosse Dj, podia ser hmmm… um chulo, ya! Porque não?
